The Watercooler

I have a continuing education class tomorrow. I feel like I’m being given in-school suspension. We have to do 40 hours of this sort of thing a year to maintain our licenses. We’ll do what we usually do; send text messages to each other and anyone else we can bother, have soduku and crossword races, doodle, and surf the net on our phones. It’s tedious and painful.

Once in a while we’ll have one of these things that actually has something to do with my job and I actually pay attention, but not all that much. I think of the 40 hours I’ll do this year maybe 5 of those hours will be relevant to my job.

What concerns me is that I’m pretty sure that everyone with a license who has to endure these things pays about as much attention to them as I do…including my doctor. Now THAT scares me. I don’t think my doctor should be doing sodukus in her CPE class. She needs to pay attention.

oh that is a HUGE factor in these things

I had a class in grad school about making presentations. Clearly no one else took the class. We were taught not to make a power point presentation of just slide after slide of text. We were also taught to make separate handouts and just use the presentation for illustrative purposes.

Every single of of these things I go to uses the slide show as the presentation and they are always page after page of text. My favorite ones are the tables that even with opera glasses there is no way to read on the screen. Oh but never fear we have the hand out right in front of us. Here let me READ it to you. Hey I can read, if that's all we're doing then can't I just do that at my desk?

Sometimes someone will get creative and put a picture on there, but not often.

I think I'm going with online classes for the rest of my time.

Is it possible that the instructor doing the inservice can't hold the audiance because they have no business teaching?
