Gaili Jensen Dissertation buy or not to buy-that is the question?

The pressure of writing a dissertation is most monstrous and unimaginable. Due to inability to handle the ginormous task on their own and deadly threatening time constraint, many people decide to buy a dissertation. It is neither an easy task to decide where to buy dissertation from nor ask for an advice on it. Judgmental as advisors may be, they regard buying dissertation online unethical which is entirely a… Continue

Grady Lee Howard Cost of Wild Things Set to Skyrocket

Max attacked his sister's room and then bit his mother, and now he has fled to Monster Island for group therapy aboard someone's very expensive dinghy. Maurice Sendak, age 90, is rolling in his money, and I bet you thought I was going to say grave. Tom Hanks (producer) believed, and Spike Jonze directed two films: this one plus "Tell Them Anything You Want", a puff piece about the dotage of gay and malcontented Sedak. I loved Sendak's work when I was little. It was the naughty porn of innocent b… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE Southern hospitality key to survival? Puh-lease

I laughed when I read that a new book credits Southern politeness for the survival of all Flight 1549 passengers on the Hudson River. The premise of Miracle on the Hudson: The Survivors of Flight 1549 is that passengers' Southern hospitality brought out the best in humanity and created an environment that led to a calm, orderly evacuation of everyone. What a load. The Observer's Tommy Tomlinson does a good job of debunking the Southern hospitality argument in this… Continue

Grady Lee Howard National Parks Burned

Sometimes I think it would be better if Americans attuned themselves more to a critical reconsideration of history and less to sentimental traditionalism. Beware in our capitalist culture when our common treasures are celebrated and suffer a glorified recounting, because they may be poised on the vortex of commercialism’s drain. Ken Burn’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea shows powerful justification for this caution, for as the editorial presenter, his point of view “cuts both ways” and… Continue

Pat Jewett The History of Health Care

Ok, so we, as a country, are about to spend billions of dollars on Short term health and Medical insurance plans for every citizen. Yet I wonder what is the history of health insurance? Why did it even come into existence? I imagine some smart accountant thought it up a long time ago, but I don't have a clue. When wa… Continue

Patrick E. Randolph Evaluate the Crazy

Should Jack Stratton be hospitalized? If anyone saw even 5 minutes of the Charlotte mayoral race debate I am sure one thing became very clear. Jack Stratton is not interested in running for mayor, and he also deranged. There were times when his rants would just come out of nowhere. Someone who has this type of paranoid personality needs to be evaluated by the mental health community. Too many times we as a society ignore these individuals, only to regret it when the go off the deep end and shoot… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE News consumer: Haven't you heard? It's all about me

It's easy to find reporters who think their lives are more interesting than the people they cover. You run into it a lot in this business, especially from the TV newsies. They love to insert themselves into a story. Many live for the clever stand-up. Face time! But lately, NPR has had me screaming at my radio. Last week, Margot Adler produced a story for All Things Considered about her beloved C… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE Mayfield's credibility grows with stepmom's arrest

As I've said before, I don't dismiss Jeremy Mayfield's insistence that he's never used meth. There are too many problems with NASCAR's drug suspension of the driver. For one, its drug-testing program is a joke. Now, we've learned that NASCAR's star witness – Mayfield's stepmother – was… Continue

Grady Lee Howard Julie and Julia

Some people think I never visit NC, but I'm in town now housesitting cats for my unemployed friend who lives in my Dallas house. She departed today for interviews in California, but before that treated me to a matinee of "Julie and Julia". It is the parallel cooking story of blogger Julie Powell of Queens and of the early chef career of Julia Child, deceased age 93 in 2004. This narrative was well-acted by all principles including Meryl Streep as Child and cute Amy Adams as Julie. I expect some… Continue

Martyn Strong Regulation of capital markets

Capital markets are unstable. In the past there was no way to make them stable. But today we have computer power that can be used to make them stable. By using the greater computer power of today we can have a much higher turn over of capital in the capital market. This higher turnover will make the market harder to game or control and the market will no longer have the unstable run ups or declines. Who can change or control the market when say 20% of the capital is trading each day? So now th… Continue

Patrick E. Randolph The real issue

I think by now we have all heard of the kiosk at Concord Mills that sells the anti-American, anti-Obama, pseudo racist paraphernalia and the fact that he is being “kicked out” this Friday. The supporters of the Free Market Warrior (aka Loren Spivack ) are screaming about freedom of speech and the rights of Americans. I think one of the more important issues here is, the mall is privately owned. The owners can do lease or not lease to whomever they want. What’s more American than free enterprise. Continue

Julie Rose What's up with Charlotte's economy?

I'm moderating WFAE's Public Conversation on the economy Wednesday night (7/29) and I'd love to hear your thoughts on questions to pose our panelists. We'll have the head of the Charlotte Regional Realtor Association, a top economist at Wells Fargo and the head of the Federal Reserve Bank in Charlotte. The basic topic for the evening: "Where is the Charlotte economy now and where is it going?" What would you like to know? What's the question that you keep yelling at the radio when you hearContinue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE Too early to dismiss Jeremy Mayfield's claims of innocence

Quote-of-the-week: “For a sport that promotes itself as being red, white and blue, these rules are almost Stalinist. It's un-American.” - Charles Yesalis, a Penn State professor and drug policy adviser to sports organizations, on NASCAR's drug policy. Yesalis made that comment to the Charlotte Observer in a Sunday story that raises many questions about the fairness of NASCAR's drug-testing policy. The im… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE Listeners keep us straight on bees, yellowjackets

You never know what's going to garner response from listeners. The one thing I have learned in this business is that people often respond to stories you least expect to get any reaction. An example of this occurred Monday. Our Morning Edition host, Scott Graf, read a sad story about the founder of the Charlotte Business Journal dying from a bee sting. In subsequent references, the "bee" was referred to as a yellowjacket. In fact, a yellowjacket was responsible for the sting. However, ye… Continue

Gregg Smith At least Obama is trying to clean up Bush's mess

It sure sounded good when candidate Obama said he’d close Gitmo and stop the Bush policies in regards to the treatment of detainees. Now president Obama has signed an executive order to keep prisoners indefinitely without a trial. He has retained the right to water board. His Congress voted 90-6 not to close Gitmo. Change? The entire debate went no deeper than implying Bush is a masochistic buffoon. No one ever considered that maybe Bush had legitimate reasons for Gitmo…until reality hit. It su… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE Governor Sanford needs to hush

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has said a lot of bizarre things in the last week in explaining away his affair with an Argentine woman. On Tuesday, this saga became even weirder. By now, you're probably familiar with his wide-ranging interview with the Associated Press. We'll get to that in a minute. First, let's address an official statement from Sanford concerning an investigation into whether public money… Continue

RubyTues continuing education

I have a continuing education class tomorrow. I feel like I’m being given in-school suspension. We have to do 40 hours of this sort of thing a year to maintain our licenses. We’ll do what we usually do; send text messages to each other and anyone else we can bother, have soduku and crossword races, doodle, and surf the net on our phones. It’s tedious and painful. Once in a while we’ll have one of these things that actually has something to do with my job and I actually pay attention, but not al… Continue

Greg Collard, News Director, WFAE A real Scooby-Doo mystery

In Vegas, you're not supposed to beat the House. If you win big, expect a little scrutiny to make sure everything was on the up-and-up. This logic also applies to winning big at Carowinds carnival games. And by big, I'm talking about a giant stuffed Scooby-Doo. Ruh-Roh. Tha… Continue

Grady Lee Howard You Don't Know What You've Got Until It's Gone

Friday ended electromagnetic airwave analog broadcast in the United States except for a few low power stations. Digital is not as much better as different. Upon reflection I think we will discover that economic considerations were more important than broadcast quality in the Big Switch. Think about this: You can convert analog to digital pretty easily, but it is hard to convert digital to analog, because esoteric aesthetic qualities are lost. We are also losing something in the switch to digital… Continue

Patrick E. Randolph Flubbed

This morning Scott Graf made a small error in his report. To correct the error he said, “check that”, and then gave the corrected information. Many times a newscaster will use “rather” as a way of correcting an error. In the Navy they use “belay that” as a means to cancel an order. I would like to know from the WFAE on air staff, what is the best way to cover a flub? Continue
