Good call, Jeff. I sent my resume to a job posting on Craigslist that seemed on-point with my experience. Instead of getting an interview or a phone call, all I got was spam email...

I agree that phone interviews are tougher than face-to-face interviews. For example, a slight hesitation in answering a question by phone can be perceived differently in person. We all say "uh," or "um," but they sound worse over the phone. The p...

Technology doesn't matter much without job openings, and most are just posted as a formality. (to survey the market or after "the candidate" is pre-selected) I got my last job because I owed a guy with influence $30,000. I'd been unemployed 4 year...

The main pressure from video conferencing will be the first minute of the interview when as an interviewee, I would be nervous about internet connection and any potential lag. Once you get past that - there would be nothing to worry about. This t...

jeff, i like the idea of taking a phone interview opportunity and turning around a suggestion to instead use video. the important next step is to ensure that you have a specific suggestion regarding the video medium...nothing kills a great display...

I think video conferencing has the ability to change the face of the entire interview process. Now with the capabilities of technology, candidates' opportunities have grown tenfold. Previously if one wanted to land a job in another state, on the o...

That is a great point Franklin. Recording the interviews would be simple and easy with video conferencing and assuming you don't blow the interview, it gives you more exposure in the company - which ideally is what you're hoping for. Also, employe...

Very interesting idea. I think the video conferencing would definitely catch on and present the benefits you mentioned. I'd imagine that it might even come to a point where the company would request permission to record the meeting so they could p...

There are at least three other people with my same name in my same city. I am considering putting my linked in, facebook and twitter names on my resume to make sure that people find the right me - not the girl with the acapulco pictures.

That Google Profile is really interesting. Thanks for pointing it out. I will definitely use it. Apparently there is some other Scot Levenson out there associated with ACORN and doesn't have a sterling rep. Not something I want to be associated with.

Jeff, very insightful article. I was unaware that Google Alerts were available to me. There is no question that in this market you need every advantage you can get - which includes ensuring your online reputation.

Don't Lose Track of Your Resume

As I continue my job search, I remember that it is important not to dilute my resume by sending it out to every recruiter and every job I see on the Internet. I am very selective about where I send my resume and in this market, I’m extremely cautious with every job posting that I see. The resume is really all that we have to differentiate and present ourselves to employers, so we can’t afford to lose control of that document. It’s important to know where your resume is at all times – because onc… Continue

Video Killing the Phone Interview?

I read an interesting blog post on the WSJ Blog about tips on how to conduct phone screen interviews. In the past, a phone interview was generally treated as a “meet and greet” where you would basically talk to someone briefly in order to set up a time for the “real interview” where the firm would fly you in to meet the hiring managers, employees, etc. However, in today… Continue

Taking Control of your Google Reputation

Any job seeker (and really everyone for that matter) should be mindful of his or her Google reputation. Your Google reputation is identified by the search results that a potential employer will see when he or she types your name into Google. Obviously, you only have control over what you post on the Internet yourself and for that, you have to… Continue

Netting the Most from Your Network

During my tenure as a corporate attorney, I never had enough time to fully utilize social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook. I definitely didn’t have much reason to sign up for a Twitter account because I spent most of my waking life in the office. Sure I signed up for Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to reconnect with some of my old friends from high school and college, but I never understood the full potential of these sites for career networking and job searching purposes. In all fairn… Continue

Getting Your Foot in the Screen[ing] Door

I never knew a laid-off lawyer until I actually became one. Sure I heard some old war stories about some lawyers losing their jobs during the dot-com bust, but I never could have imagined seeing such wide spread attorney and staff layoffs at almost every major law firm in the country.

As we’re all aware, the economy and society have changed irreversibly and the jobs that many of us once had no longer exist and there’s no knowing whether or not those jobs will ever come back. As a result, many p… Continue
